Emergency Generator Fuel System Upgrade in Washington, D.C.

Project Description:

Project Overview

Verizon’s Lincoln Central Office in Washington, D.C., needed an upgrade to its emergency generator fuel system to ensure reliable backup power in case of outages. The project involved removing an aging 4,000-gallon underground fuel storage tank and associated piping, followed by the installation of a modern, double-wall 4,000-gallon fiberglass tank with upgraded monitoring capabilities.

Challenges

  • The existing underground tank and piping system were to be safely removed and replaced without disrupting operations.
  • A seamless fuel supply transition was required to maintain generator functionality throughout the upgrade.
  • The project needed to comply with environmental and regulatory standards.

Solution

To ensure a smooth transition for our customers, we approached the job in phases:

  1. Removal of Existing System:
    • Excavated and removed the old 4,000-gallon underground fuel storage tank, along with associated components including concrete deadmen, fuel oil fill, supply, return, riser, and vent lines.
  2. Temporary Fuel Supply:
    • Installed a temporary 1,000-gallon aboveground storage tank.
    • Connected temporary piping to the existing generator to maintain continuous power backup.
  3. Installation of New System:
    • Delivered and air-tested a new 4,000-gallon double-wall underground Xerxes fiberglass tank.
    • Installed new supply and return piping, including double-wall fiberglass underground vent piping.
    • Set the tank in place with new concrete deadmen for structural stability.
    • Tanks Direct mounted and installed a Veeder Root tank monitoring system. This system includes a level probe and an interstitial leak detection sensor for enhanced safety and regulatory compliance.

Results

  • Seamless Transition: The use of a temporary fuel storage system ensured that the emergency generator remained operational throughout the project.
  • Enhanced Monitoring: The new Veeder Root system provides real-time fuel level tracking and leak detection, improving operational efficiency and safety.
  • Regulatory Compliance: The new installation adheres to current environmental and safety regulations for underground fuel storage.
  • Long-Term Reliability: The upgraded system ensures Verizon’s Lincoln Central Office has a durable and reliable backup fuel supply for its emergency power needs.

Conclusion

By strategically phasing the project and implementing modern fuel storage and monitoring technology, Verizon successfully upgraded its emergency generator fuel system without disrupting operations. The new system enhances safety, reliability, and compliance, ensuring continuous power availability in critical situations.
